You watch as the colorful ball flies out of your hand, gliding across the polished hardwood. The sound of the pins exploding fills the dimly lit building. You and your friends celebrate as you enjoy a nice night out, but for others the bowling alley isn’t just a weekend hangout. A couple lanes to your left you might see the WKHS bowling teams practicing intensely for their next meet.

The bowling team is one of the many unrecognized clubs and teams here at WKHS, the bowling team is filled with a special kind of athlete unlike many others, they may not run for touchdowns or shoot big three’s.

The sport takes a certain type of focus unlike any other. Bowlers need to train themselves to throw the ball certain ways or how to knock down that 7-10 split. The perfect game consist of 12 strikes in a row scoring at 300. Many WKHS bowlers average around 150-200 points a game.

MHSAA rules state that each conference meet is filled with two regular games and two “baker” games to add up to a team score. The baker system in bowling is where two bowlers partner up and bowl alternating frames. Team scores both should add up to 30, the team with the higher score wins

For many WKHS bowlers, winning is routine. Behind coach James Olerich, the bowling teams are able to consistently win each week.

The girls team took second at the Oakland County Invite and the Boys had a top 16 finish. Sophomore Aaron Damron and Seniors Samantha Gdula and Sarah Antonelli all finished with individual highs.

As the season continues there are many meets left for each team, but many of our WKHS bowlers are striving for March fourth and fifth, The State Championship Tournament at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights. At the state meet all qualifying bowlers will test their skills to achieve the title of state champ.
